The Windows 10 Codec Pack is a free easy to install bundle of codecs/filters/splitters used for playing back movie and music files. After installation you will be able to play 99.9% of files. I downloaded some videos with my Windows Media Player 11. But now get a message that my player doesn't support MP4 extensions. I tried to get the codecs I needed and ended up with some other flash players. How can I install the codec for the necessary codec for the Windows Media Player? This package was known as Windows Media Player 9 Codecs Pack and it was designed for network administrators interested in offering support for the latest Windows Media Audio and Video codecs for enterprise computers which run the following applications: Windows Media Player 7.1, Windows Media Player for Windows XP, Windows Media Player 9 Series, and Windows Media Player 10. The Media Player Codec Pack supports almost every compression and file type used by modern video and audio files. The package is simple to install, while also offering advanced settings to the high end user: For simple installation select 'Easy Installation'. For advanced installation options select 'Expert Installation'. Microsoft provides Media Feature Pack for every version of Windows 10 including the latest 1803 version. Media Feature Pack is the safest option for multimedia management as it’s provided by Microsoft and it can be fully integrated into Windows.

HEVC video (a.k.a. H.265):

There are two versions of this codec. A free one and one that you can buy from Microsoft for $1 in the Windows 10 store. The free version only works on systems that have a graphics card (GPU) that is capable of hardware accelerated decoding of HEVC video.

You can install these Media Foundation codecs by simply double-clicking on the downloaded .appx file.

You can uninstall these codecs via Windows Settings. Same way as you uninstall other items downloaded from the Windows 10 store.

If you have a European N or Korean KN edition of Windows then you should also install the Media Feature Pack from Microsoft to gain additional multimedia functionality.
